Make Your Dumb Car—And Yourself—Smarter

Future Car Touchscreen

If your car isn’t connected, it may as well be wearing a dunce hat. That’s because so many cars today are smarter than ever with free apps and new tech that make it stupidly easy to keep up. To amp up your car’s IQ and your own convenience and safety, we’ve compiled the top smart car gadgets and apps you can use to make your life as a car owner sheerly genius.

Automatic

By plugging the Automatic device into your diagnostic port and downloading an app on your smartphone, you can open up a new world of connectivity, data, and ease. Connecting to your phone through Bluetooth, Automatic can store information about car diagnostics, where you parked, and even access emergency services if you get in an accident. You don’t have to have a new car either. Automatic works with most every car from 1996 and newer. Talk about going back to the future.

IFTTT (If This, Then That)

IFTTT is an app that works with Automatic and behaves like a personal secretary. Retrieving information from Automatic, you can use IFTTT to create a “recipe” for what to do next. For example, when you pull the car out of the driveway, IFTTT can be programmed to close the garage door. IFTTT also extends beyond a car trip and can be told to save a file to your computer if you take a photo on Instagram and so much more—making your life smarter too! There are tons of pre-programmed “recipes” and you’re able to create some of your own as well.

Unmooch

Are you the one everyone looks to when someone asks, “Who’s going to drive?” If so, nix the annoyance with the cost-sharing app, Unmooch. Using GPS to determine how long your drive will be and the cost-sharing app, Venmo, Unmooch determines how much money gas will cost per trip and divide it amongst your passengers. That way, you won’t be the only one who always fills up at the pump.

License+

A sure way to tick off your teen is to hover incessantly. With
License+
, an app designed to help them learn how to drive more safely and responsibly through 100 hours of training, you won’t have to. While the app monitors hard braking, fast acceleration, and speeding, it notifies the driver through beeps and reports back to you through its online dashboard. This allows you to monitor your teen’s progress without growing too many gray hairs in the process and teach them rules of the road that will keep them safe.

YourMechanic

If you have Automatic, you can also log into the convenient app,
YourMechanic
. By accessing the auto diagnostic information that Automatic stores, YourMechanic will then send you alerts when your car is in need of a tune-up, help you schedule appointments, give you a quote, and send a mechanic right to your home or office. It’s like having your own grease monkey at your beck and call so you can save time and money.

Signal Labs

A brand new start-up out of Silicon Valley, Signal Labs is a safety app designed to warn drivers in ways that road signs cannot. After the founder lost a friend to a car accident (he unfortunately  misjudged a sign and drove off of a cliff), he’s been working to create smarter digital road signs for car dashboards.

The way Signal works is by using precise data collected from traffic incidents, police reports, private fleet reports, and road layouts to warn drivers of serious and prevalent incidents in certain areas. While it is not for sale to the general public just yet, Signal hopes to create digital signs that will alert drivers about everything from where fatal accidents have occurred to prone accident zones to dangerous intersections, popular biker and pedestrian routes, and much more.
